TOP-RANKED DUNBAR DOES ITS DAMAGE ON THE DIAMOND
SENIOR-LED BULLDOGS WON’T RATTLE EASILY IN 43RD
Mike Fields, Herald-Leader Staff Writer

When you’re No. 1, people throw everything they’ve got at you.

Paul Dunbar, the top-ranked baseball team in the state, knows the feeling. A few nights ago vandals threw a brick through a window at the Bulldogs’ complex, stuck a hose into one of the offices and left the water running.
The room was flooded, but there was no real damage. After all, it’s hard to wash away what Dunbar has accomplished this season.

The Bulldogs are 30-3 and No. 1 in the state going into the 43rd District Tournament that starts today.

Dunbar’s top pitcher is senior right-hander Josh Ellis, who is 6-0 after coming back from knee surgery. The team’s top hitter is senior first baseman Dustin Morrow, who is hitting .475 with 35 RBI and 31 runs. Senior shortstop Rob Scott has set a school record with 40 runs this season.

“I feel like we’ve got nothing to prove,” Coach Mickey Marshall said. “If we put some runs on the board, we’ll be all right. We’ve got solid pitching and a lot of confidence. We hope those things take us a long way.”

But Marshall also knows there are no “gimmes” in this district. Dunbar plays Bryan Station in today’s opener. Even though the Defenders have struggled this season, Marshall recalls what happened when Bryan Station met Henry Clay in the first round last year.

“The Bryan Station kid (Dominique Starks) threw a no-hitter,” he said.

Lafayette, No. 11 in the state, plays unranked Henry Clay in the second game today. Host Tates Creek plays the Dunbar-Station winner in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Tates Creek is led by senior shortstop John Shelby, Gatorade’s Player of the Year in Kentucky. He’s hitting .456 with nine homers, 28 runs and 24 RBI.

“In this district, anybody can beat anybody,” Marshall said. “You’ve got to play well to win.”

Lexington Catholic Coach Rodney Martin, whose Knights are No. 2 in the state, has the same trepidation heading into the 42nd District.

If fifth-ranked West Jessamine beats Sayre in today’s opener, it will face Catholic in Tuesday’s semifinals. In the other bracket, East Jessamine and Lexington Christian are seen as district threats, too.

“It’s a tough way to go,” Martin said. “There are four teams that on a given day can beat anybody.”

Catholic is led at the plate by shortstop Michael DeLuca and second baseman Matt Menard, both of whom are hitting over .550. DeLuca, a senior, or Taylor Brooks, a sophomore, will start on the mound in the semifinals.

The 42nd and 43rd district winners and runners-up advance to the 11th Region Tournament at Woodford County next week.
