After the 2003 season, Josh received the Gatorade Player of the Year Award and Mr. Kentucky Baseball Award. He then went on to play 4 years for Wake Forest, where he posted 72 strikeouts in 50 innings in his senior year for the Demon Deacons.
His strong performance earned him recognition from Major League scouts. Following graduation from Wake Forest, Ellis was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 11th round (343rd overall) of the 2007 amateur draft. This marked the first Dunbar alumni drafted since his brother, AJ Ellis, was drafted by the Dodgers in 2003.
Ellis has thrived in the professional ranks. As of 12/30/10, he has amassed an ERA of 3.70 and 238 strikeouts in 219 innings in the minor leagues, reaching as high as AAA for the Diamondbacks organization.
